See the countryside and experience local Cambodian life
Kampong Speu province is a beautiful and diverse area. On this trip we will take you to some of the more remote places in Cambodia. You can see the local village life, learn about the Cambodian culture and see some beautiful landscapes.
All of this can't be done in 1 day, so we will spend the night at our family's farm, where you can try some delicious local food.
See the countryside
Take a break from the city and get some fresh air in the countryside. We will visit ricefields, see local villages and eat local food.
Overnight stay at our family farm
Our family farm will be your home during this trip. There are dogs, chickens, ducks and babies running around there, so watch your step.
There is barely streaming water available, so you have to shower with buckets. Though hot water is available. We also have a western style toilet and actual matrasses. So you don't need to sleep on the ground (though we won't stop you if you want to).
Light hiking at a waterfall
Near the farm is a series of cascades, called “The 9-step Waterfall”. Depending on the season and the weather, we can walk up to the highest “step”.
Delicious homecooked meals
For dinner at the farm we will make a delicious homecooked meal. There are a few dishes you can choose from and we can accomodate any dietery requirement. And if you feel like it, you can even try your hand at cooking yourself.
All other meals during the trip are also prepared by us (where us really means Vathana).
A visit to the monkey pagoda
This pagoda lives up to it's name, it's surrouned by monkeys. We can reach it by going across a swaying wooden bridge.
This trip will show you a side of Cambodia that most people won't experience. While the Cambodian countrysde is lacking in certain areas, we don't try to make you uncomfortable on purpose. That's why our minivan has airco, the matrasses are soft and our voices are soothing.
We have all of the things you need available for you, like sheets, towels, etc. The only thing you need to bring is an overnight bag.
The trip is suitable for all ages, families with babies or seasoned backpackers are welcome. The price covers all expenses during this trip, including 4 meals, entrance fees, transporation everywhere and a reasonable amount of drinks. A reasonable amount means that we will bring enough drinks for the 2 days, but it is not meant as a party. If you want that, you can always buy some more drinks along the way.
Our trip to Kampong Speu province is a two day trip. We require at least 2 people to do a tour and we usually take at most 7 people. Single travellers can of course join a group already going and special arrangements can be made for larger groups, so don't hesitate to contact us if that is the case.
9:30Pickup in Phnom Penh
10:30Traditional rice machine
12:00Pagoda & Lunch
15:30Shopping at market
17:30Drop-off in Phnom Penh
We will pick you up in the morning anywhere in Phnom Penh and then head to the rice machine on the edge of the city. Then it's over an hour driving before we reach the pagoda where we will have lunch. After lunch we will drive to the local market near the farm for some shopping. Once at the farm, you can relax a bit before dinner.
On the second day the noisy roosters and chickens around the farm will probably wake you up before breakfast. After that, we will head to see the waterfall, walk around there and we go back to the farm for lunch. We see the monkey pagoda in the afternoon, which is halfway back to Phnom Penh. We will arrange a tuktuk for you in Phnom Penh near the airport to take you back into town, since it's rush hour around that time and tuktuks are actually a quicker way to get back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the sleeping arrangments like?
At the farm, there are 3 rooms available for guests. Each room is suitable for 2 or 3 people and includes a fan. There are comfortable matresses, pillows and blankets available.
There is a shared bathroom with western style toilets. The rooms also includes a locker, where you can keep your valuable stuff, so you don't have to worry about it.
Afterwards, can we go to Sihanoukville instead of going back to Phnom Penh?
Yes, that's possible. Since the farm is about halfway between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, that would save you a lot of time. It's about 2—2,5 hours by bus from there. You can take the bus in the early afternoon and be in Sihanoukville in time for dinner.
We will arrange bus tickets for you and bring you to the bus stop near by the farm. We recommend using the Giant Ibis bus company, since they are reliable and comfortable.
By going directly to Sihanoukville, you will miss out on the Monkey Pagoda, since that is near Phnom Penh. There is also an extra cost for the bus tickets itself of course.
If you are interested in this, please let us know when you book the tour, because we need to arrange the bus and get the tickets beforehand.
You can also reach other places quicker from Kampong Speu by not going back to Phnom Penh, like Kampot or Koh Kong. We can bring you to a bus stop or pick-up point near by, but you would have to make your own travel arrangements. Again, let us know if you want that beforehand, to make sure it's possible with our schedule.
